Thanksgiving is a holiday that everyone looks forward to. It typically conjures up images of a roast turkey, a table full of yumminess and an apple pie to top it all off.
However, Thanksgiving is not always easy for some people. Some cannot afford the Thanksgiving feast many of us take for granted. So for those who are worried about where their Thanksgiving dinner will come from, or for those who want to spread Thanksgiving joy with others, there are many local food drives here in Denton that can help.
Students do not have to travel further than the TWU campus for access to a food drive.
The North Texas Food Bank has a mobile food pantry that is available for students, staff and faculty here at TWU. The food pantry comes to campus multiple times a year, but it will be here on Nov. 16, just in time for Thanksgiving. Whether you want to volunteer or pick up food for a Thanksgiving feast, the NTFB food pantry will be located in Jones Hall East Parking lot. There are eligibility requirements for those who wish to obtain food from the mobile food pantry, but those who are in need will not be turned away.

There is another mobile food pantry for all Denton residents as well. The Denton Mobile Food Pantry opens every second Saturday of the month, including this upcoming Saturday. This month, the food pantry will be located in the parking lot of First Baptist Denton. The food pantry is made possible through the partnership of the Denton Hunger Coalition and Tarrant Area Food Bank. The pantry will be open from 9-11 a.m. this Saturday. You can volunteer to help run the event through Serve Denton’s website.
For those who lack the cooking skills for a great Thanksgiving, the Village Church can make up for that. The church is hosting a Thanksgiving banquet for any Dentonite who wants to come share a meal with the community. All families and individuals are welcome to the feast, which will be taking place at Calhoun Middle School on Nov. 26 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration to serve at the banquet is closed already, but there is always a need for extra clean-up help after the banquet is over.
Lastly, Denton County Friends of the Family is hosting a food drive to provide a Thanksgiving meal for families who have been through some dark times. The food drive is open until Nov. 13, and you can help these families who have been affected by domestic abuse by donating. There is a list of food that is needed on the DCFOF website. According to Community Resource Coordinator Desiree Melkovitz, the goal of the DCFOF is “to provide for over 600 of our clients who have been impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault.”
Thanksgiving should be enjoyed by everyone, no matter the circumstance. This season, volunteer to give someone a happy Thanksgiving and share the holiday spirit.
