Get your foot in the door: Career and Internship Fair

Over 50 employers will be recruiting TWU students this Wednesday at the Career and Internship Fair from 12 to 3 p.m. in Hubbard Hall, hosted by the Career Connections Center.

The fair is an opportunity solely for TWU students to learn and ask potential employers questions. Sometimes, students may not know what they want to do, and the career fair offers the opportunity for exploration just as much as it does for those who have a clear-cut career path already in mind. Part of the awareness that attracts students to the career fair is understanding why it would be of value for them to come.

“You’re not going to have this kind of opportunity when you graduate,” Director of the Career Connections Center Lisa Garza said.

Employers generally only look at resumes for 15 seconds and have become more interested in hiring first-year and sophomore students for internship placements. This makes it more important for students to engage with career connections services early and often. Doing so will help students become more successful by getting more information about job options and what it takes to get there.

According to Handshake student portal, a few of the employers include several different police departments (Garland, The Colony, and others), Castle Hills Chiropractic, child care centers, and even a couple of TWU departments: Admissions and Human Resources. Students can log in to their Handshake account here with their regular TWU login information. Click on the “Events” tab to locate this information.

Garza gave a few tips to prepare:

  • Plan out something professional and conservative to wear.
  • Bring multiple copies of a resume, preferably critiqued by the Career Connections Center staff.
  • Review the list of registered employers on TWU Connect and pick five companies to research and visit.

A photographer will also be available to take free professional headshots which TWU students can have access to, even without participating in the entire career and internship fair. The Career Connections Center also offers several other opportunities throughout the semester for students.
