Diversifying Through Discussion

Here at TWU, we often pride ourselves over our beautifully diverse campus. Not only is our campus aesthetically pleasing, but it is also culturally diverse. The array of students and staff found here at TWU truly is what makes us, us.

However, the fact that we are a culturally and ethnically diverse campus does not immediately make us professionals at handling every aspect and challenge that comes with having a diverse student body. The proliferation of opposing viewpoints and differing ideas will always be present among large groups of people. Just because we are a diverse campus does not mean that everybody at TWU shares the same beliefs.

The inevitable differences in ideas within a group of 15,000 students has led the TWU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to facilitate the Cultural CafĂ©- the aim is to try and create a safe space within which students can discuss important identities, all of which is done through open discussion.

The Cultural Cafe is a recurring program that started Sept. 13. There are three more planned meetings that will take place on Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 6, all of which are on a Wednesday. The meetings take place in the Student Union room 113 from 12:15 pm to 1; participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and join the Cultural Cafe.

The main goal of the Cultural Cafe is to create a medium for learning and sharing cultural identities. Individuals will discuss a variety of Cultural diversity topics including, but not limited to, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion/spirituality, age, disability, able-bodiedness, family system, immigration status, nation/region of origin, social/economic class, body size/shape and other cultural variables.

This is open to current students, faculty and staff. If this sounds like something you or anybody you know would be interested in, please do not hesitate to come and join the Cultural Cafe for an engaging and inclusive time. For questions about this ongoing event, or for disability accommodations, please contact Marshall Bewley at Mbewley@twu.edu or call 940-898-3801 at the Texas Woman’s University Counseling and Psychological Services.
