Diamond on the Shelf: Deep Blue review

Fun fact about me: I love mermaid stories. Ever since I was a little girl, “The Little Mermaid” has been one of my favorite movies of all time. When I stumbled across this novel recently, the little kid inside of me got really excited.

“Deep Blue” is the first book in the Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly. It is told primarily through the point-of-view of a young mermaid named Serafina who is the principessa of the kingdom of Miromara. Serafina has always felt trapped as a member of the royal household and those feelings only grew on the morning of her coronation and betrothal. Her biggest worry should be about reuniting with her betrothed, Prince Mimagesahdi, who used to be her best friend and who she is still in love with. Instead, she is haunted by strange nightmares foretelling of ancient evil and on the morning of her coronation, the city is stormed by assassins. Serafina and her best friend Neela escape the attack and are forced to go on the run. The two mermaids embark on a quest to search for four others who are bound by prophecy as well.

When I started reading the novel, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail and creativity that the novel had to offer. Donnelly did more than simply come up with a plot and characters; she created a fantasy world that captivates the readers and transports them to a beautiful world of imagination. It was also very helpful that the author put a glossary in the back of the book that I could refer to if I ever got confused.

“Deep Blue” by Jennifer Donnelly is equal parts adventure and wit; a riveting thriller that keeps the reader flipping through the pages, excited to find out what happens next. Honestly, it was the type of book that grabbed my attention and refused to let go, keeping me guessing as to what danger was going to befall Serafina next. If you love fantasy novels such as “Harry Potter,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” or “Percy Jackson,” then this is definitely a book you should check out. It’s the first in a series of four with a great cliffhanger ending. I had trouble putting the book down and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, “Rogue Wave.”
