Convocation

TWU’s new twist to this year’s convocation made the homecoming event more engaging and entertaining while still celebrating the university’s accomplishments and past.

Convocation began as usual with the procession of TWU faculty in their graduation regalia into the Margo Jones Performance Hall where senior Drama major Nolan Chapa greeted the audience and explained that he would now be stepping in to the role of Dr. Louis Herman Hubbard, President of TWU from 1926-1950.

From this point on, Chapa gave a history of TWU under Dr. Hubbard’s presidency while using stage props and other performers in accurate period dress to recreate photos displayed on stage. Dr. Hubbard’s son and his grandchildren were in attendance.

After this, convocation presented faculty and staff awards then transitioned into an overview of distinctions TWU earned and achievements made in the 2016-2017 school year. In the area of health the College of Nursing celebrated their first ever White Coat Ceremony this year and the Counseling and Psychological Services received reaccreditation and celebrated its 30 year anniversary. Regarding veteran affairs, TWU was awarded the distinction of being a Military Friendly School for the eighth year in a row. The university also created the Center for Woman in Business, placed third in the nation-wide Outdoor Challenge and achieved many new records in the athletics realm.

TWU President and Chancellor Dr. Carine Feyten brought convocation to a close with a look at the university under Dr. Hubbard’s guidance and how the ground work he laid has enabled TWU to become the “cultural Mecca” he wanted it to be.
