Group exercise and specialty classes

TWU’s Fitness and Recreation program is offering group exercise classes to help students get into shape. The classes began in August at the start of the semester and will continue through November 20, the week before Thanksgiving break. Classes are primarily held Monday through Friday, and two weekend classes are held on Sundays.

Supervisor of Fitness Programming Allison Meguro shared: “Group exercise classes have been offered here as long as I can remember. I graduated from here in 2007, and when I was in school, from 2005 to 2007, we’ve had group exercise classes ever since then.”

She added: “We average about 10 classes per night, and we have from 10 to 35 participants with each class. We average between 1,000 and 1,200 students per month.”

Meguro elaborated: “We have quite a few events. This year in particular, we’re planning a Halloween Zumba-thon. We’ve done it in the past, and it’s been a huge hit. Students are encouraged to dress up, and we decorate the rooms, do black lights and things like that, so that’s a really fun event.”

She continued: “Every year, for first-year students, we do a ‘Get Rec-ed’ event where we open up the facility for new students to come in and check it out. We also have demos of our exercise classes.” Meguro also shared how student organizations are welcome to sign up for group classes together.

Fit and Rec on Campus

Meguro stated: “I think Fit and Rec in general wants to bring a sense of community to the students, a place where they can get exercise, relieve stress, have fun and meet other students. It’s just a good stress outlet.”

The group exercise classes can also contribute to the Outdoor Nation competition. Meguro said: “We’re pushing Outdoor Nation in all of our programs now, and we’re offering outdoor classes. Specifically, at 6 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, we have a group exercise class outside. On Mondays and Wednesdays, we offer outdoor yoga. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we have outdoor Zumba. We also are doing some noontime classes outside, like a cycle class outside on Wednesdays and Thursdays.”

She added: “It’s a fun way for students to get exercise here on campus while still logging their points for Outdoor Nation.”

Speaking on student involvement, Meguro said: “I would say group exercise classes are one of the most popular activities we offer.”
