Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated since 1862 when the Mexican Army defeated the French Empire. For 157 years, people have been celebrating the victory, and Denton is no different.
This year, the city of Denton will host the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration all day Saturday, May 4. The website states, “This free event celebrates the diversity in the Denton Community and features activities for the entire family.” The parade and festivities will be held at the Denton Quakertown Park, located at 321 E. McKinney street. Last year, over 6,000 people attended the celebration. This year the event is expected to host even more. To kick off the event, the parade will start in the Texas Woman’s University parking lot at the corner of Locust and Oakland Streets at 10 a.m.
Throughout the day there will be a variety of entertainment for all ages. Event goers can expect to see Hispanic bands, local school performers and the Little Miss Cinco de Mayo pageant. There will be numerous vendors at the festival selling a wide variety of foods, drinks, jewelry, crafts and more. For those who are younger than six years, there will be a piñata along with a craft section available for all children to create their own traditional Mexican crafts.
Many local shops and stops will also be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with special drink offers, foods and music.
Hailey’s Club will be celebrating early May 4. There will be performances from Fab Dueces, Grey Matter, Mesa Lopez and Los Patos Poderosos. The show starts at 9 p.m. and is $6 for 21+ and $10 for 18+. Hailey’s is located at 122 West Mulberry St.
East Side Denton and Oak Street Drafthouse are coming together to host an event that will benefit The Guys & Girls Operating as Leaders Denton program. May 5 at 2 p.m. there will be free tacos while supplies last. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the early bird special will be going on where patrons can buy $3 specialty drinks; after 2 p.m., the drinks go up to $4. This event is located at 117 E Oak St.
Andy’s Bar is hosting a Cinco de Motto Fiesta that kicks off at 9 a.m. May 5. Andy’s is partnering with Denton Motor Collective and The Denton Independent Motorcycle show. This free family event welcomes all ages with or without motorcycles. There will be food, drinks, costume contests, races and an unofficial parade lap around the square. Andy’s is located at 122 N Locust St.
