Celebrating 30 years of coming out

Thursday, Oct. 11 is National Coming Out Day. This national holiday is an annual celebration that commemorates LGBTQ awareness. This year is special because it marks the 30th anniversary of National Coming Out Day. National Coming Out Day occurs on Oct. 11 in honor of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which happened on Oct. 11, 1987. The day celebrates the power coming out can have in an individual’s life.

Some students may not be aware of the numerous LGBTQIA resources that TWU’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach has to offer. PRIDE is a student organization on TWU’s Denton campus that offers a safe and fun way to meet and interact with gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, questioning, queer and any other sexual orientation or gender minority students and their allies. TWU Counseling and Psychological Services offers additional resources and support services. Student Life Legal Services provides free consultations and referral information for all students. There are also multiple all gender restrooms located on the Denton campus. As stated on the Human Rights Campaign website, “Every person who speaks up changes more hearts and minds and creates new advocates for equality.” If you are interested in learning more about National Coming Out Day, visit the Human Rights Campaign’s website,  https://www.hrc.org/resources/national-coming-out-day.
