Career Advice and a Slice

Throughout January and February, the Career Connections Center will be holding multiple ‘Career Advice and a Slice’ events. Students can explore career opportunities with professionals and potential employers in a causal atmosphere. One or two representatives from a particular organization will be set up at individual tables, and groups of students will be welcome to sit down at each table, have a slice of pizza and talk with professionals about different opportunities within their organizations. The events stress a casual networking atmosphere, and typical classroom attire is welcome. Representatives will talk about their personal career paths, and students are encouraged to come and listen to their stories, regardless of their major. Director of Career Connections Center Lisa Garza shared, “Major does not equal career . . . the people who are coming don’t necessarily have an expectation that the students who sit down at their table know anything about what they do or necessarily intend to pursue a career in that; they’re just there to learn.”

Each event will feature organizations from related fields. The first event, taking place on Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 12 to 1 p.m. in Student Union Room 207, will emphasize public service and government organizations. Organizations that have been confirmed for this event are the Greater Denton Arts Council, the City of Dallas, the City of Lewisville, the Denton County Probate Court and the FBI. On Feb. 6, the event will emphasize helping professions, and it is also taking place in SU Room 207 from 12 to 1 p.m. Finally, on Feb. 27, the event will emphasize creative professions, and it too will take place in SU Room 207 from 12 to 1 p.m.
