Recently, a crime alert was sent to TWU students on March 29. The crime committed happened on March 28 at 7:22 a.m. on the 700 block of Oakland. TWU students were alerted of this crime 26 hours after it took place. Even though the incident didn’t take place on campus, it did happen just half a mile from TWU.

Be Alert

 Since there is no guarantee that information about crimes will be sent out quickly, it is our duty to be alert and to be aware of our surroundings.

According to TWU’s Campus Carry law, students can conceal carry in specific zones on campus. Students may also carry knives smaller than 5.5 in., as well as pepper spray. These items can help you fight off a potential criminal. Arguably, being able to defend yourself is very important to your safety. 

How to defend yourself

If you are in a situation where you need to defend yourself but you don’t have any weapons to help you, there are a few things you can still do. Be loud and draw as much attention to yourself as possible. Someone nearby may hear and come to help. If you can, run and try to get away. If running is not an option, fight back. The eyes, nose, throat and groin are sensitive areas. If you can, hit these areas as hard as you can to try to stun the attacker long enough for you to run.

Report

If you witness a crime taking place, report it as soon as possible. To report, you can either tell a DPS officer personally, or use one of the emergency phones placed around campus.
