Building positive routines

As the semester is in full swing,  little details seem to start falling through the cracks. While sometimes it may seem pointless to do the little things, they can really help to  maintain some version of your sanity.

The same thing can be said for daily routines. Structure  helps us to keep our focus and mindset needed for our studies, work and     social life. I encourage you to maintain your routines and little, quirky things that help you get through the day or week.

If you don’t feel like you have a daily routine,   here are some pointers to get you started.

Start somewhere

Pick a time of the day—whether it is morning or night—and pick a few things that will help you get ready for your next task. For me, in the evenings after I shower, I always put on stress-relief lotion after I take my contacts out, and then I brush my teeth.

Consistency is key

At first, I didn’t see a difference; however, after a few weeks of keeping this consistent routine, I found that it didn’t take as long to fall asleep because my body began to realize it was time for rest.

Regardless of what routine you are interested in starting, I highly suggest to stick with it, even if it doesn’t seem to have instant gratification. Patience is something I struggle with, so I understand wanting immediate results. If you are like me, this consistent routine building will also double as a lesson in patience.

Increase your tasks

After you feel like you have a good grip on your first routine,  continue to build upon it or begin a new routine for a different time.  You may realize it is easier to establish subsequent routines, which is great encouragement that you are on the right track.

Positive routines can make a world of a difference.
