Brighten up Christmas with holiday lights

Now that it is objectively acceptable to celebrate all things Christmas, here is the down-low on where to go to see the best lights in town.

For northeastern TWU students at the Dallas and Denton campuses, free holiday fun is easy to come by in the DFW area. A few of my favorites are Christmas at the Beach, the Frisco Christmas in the Square but most of all, neighborhood displays.

Christmas at the Beach in Little Elm Park will display Santaland from Dec. 1 – 31 with a 30-foot Christmas tree, music, hot cocoa, s’mores on the beach and decorated elf houses. Entrance is free, but commemorative photos with Santa will cost money on days that Santa visits (Dec. 2 and 3 only). More information can be found on their website.

Frisco may be a drive from campus, but students might be closer once they go home for the holidays. Featuring over 175,000 lights, 11.5 miles of wiring and 8 miles of extension cords, light and sound choreography by Frisco’s Jeff Trykoski runs daily from 6-10 p.m. Nov. 23 through Dec. 31 for the 14th annual Christmas in the Square. Visitors can enjoy the show by tuning in to 107.3 FM on the radio and driving through the square.

Other events offered are ice-skating, a Christmas tree maze and the Christmas tree lot operated by Boy Scout Troop 51. However, these festivities come with a cost. More information about the event is on their website.

My personal favorite Christmas tradition is driving through neighborhoods to look at Christmas lights with my family and a hot cup of cocoa. Some of the best are Deerfield in Plano, Highland Park and Interlochen in Arlington. More DFW events and information on the neighborhoods can be found here.

For students whose homes are closer to the Houston campus, there is Lights in the Heights Saturday, Dec. 8. Here, pedestrians can enjoy Christmas lights, caroling, jazz bands and more played from front porches, driveways and yards of homes on Euclid and Byrne. The event will take place from 5 – 9 p.m., and the map can be found by using the hyperlink above.

River Oaks, Pecan Grove and Tanglewood are other popular neighborhoods to drive through and see decorated houses in the Houston area. An abundant list of holiday neighborhoods to visit can be found here. With that, happy holidays and Christmas light hunting.
