The Best of Dorms and the Worst of Dorms

Dorm life can be the best of times and it can be the worst of times.

Having to share such a tight space with another person can be challenging, but it can also be very rewarding. Just like anything else, living in the dorms has its pros and cons. Whether or not the dorms are enjoyable to live in is simply a matter of opinion. To guide you in forming your opinion, here are some pros and cons to dorm living.

Living in the dorms makes it very easy to get to class on time without the hassle of waking up super early. Commuters have to undertake the unpleasant process of waking up long before their class starts so they can make the trip to TWU, find parking (which has become increasingly difficult these last few months), and trek to class. Dorm livers, on the other hand, simply have to roll out of bed, grab their stuff and walk to class. Sophomore Molore Agunbiade said her favorite part of living is the dorms is “classes are right here, so I can just get out of bed and go to class on time.” Sophomore Madeline Boutwell also stated that the best part of living in the dorms is “being so connected to campus.”

However, there is also a drawback to the dorms. It can be hard to make it feel like home. Agunbiade admitted the worst part is “you can’t paint the walls the color you want it to be. It has to be TWU white.” The dorms are relatively small, so there is not much room for decoration, but more importantly, for basic home appliances. Boutwell claimed she hates “not having [her] own kitchen.” The dorms may keep you connected, but students can attest that the home sweet home feeling is sometimes rather lacking.

Dorm living has its ups and downs. Consider the positive aspects of living in the dorm before dismissing the idea of it, but also keep your personality in mind before deciding if living in a dorm would be a good fit for you.
