Basketball gains ground after slow start to the season

            With two wins in the past week, Texas Woman’s University Basketball is progressing on their win-loss ratio after overcoming their seven-streak loss with a win against Cameron University Saturday, Jan. 19 and a one-point loss to Eastern New Mexico Thursday, Jan. 24.

The Pioneers traveled to Canyon Saturday, Jan. 26 to take on the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, who are ranked 14th in in the nation. With a one-point difference, 35-34, the Pioneers took the lead into halftime, but ended up falling to the Lady Buffs, 80-63, by the end of the fourth quarter.

According to an article from the TWU athletics page, key players of the Jan. 26 game were freshman Macy Wilkerson with a team-high of 16 points, sophomore Ma’K’La Woods with 14 points, junior Carissa Moody with 13 points and nine rebounds and senior KJ Stastny with 11 points, including four assists and two boards.

The girls forewent any further losses and took a 62-59 win against UT Permian Basin in Odessa, Thursday, Jan. 31. The game was close until the last 6:11 left of the quarter, but points from Wilkerson, Moody, Stastny and sophomore Kam Daily helped the Pioneers overcome the Falcons, putting the girls in a more positive mindset before their away game over the weekend.

TWU traveled to Silver City, New Mexico this past Saturday, Feb. 2, to bring home a 76-58 win against the Western New Mexico Mustangs. Dynamite duo Stastny and Wilkerson carried the Pioneers to victory with 23 and 28 points, respectively. Moody, Woods and junior London Archer also racked up points for the win. The first three quarters were close, leading to a fourth-quarter Mustang massacre of 25-12, TWU.

The Pioneers bring their two away-game wins back home to host their next game against Texas A&M-Kingsville in the Kitty Magee Arena Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
