Basketball begins with success

Beginning the season with eight veterans, five new signees, three freshmen and two transfers, the Pioneer basketball team is prepared to take down the competition. Head basketball coach for the Pioneers Beth Jillson said she is confident her team is built for success.

“Our juniors and seniors are a veteran group who understand the Lone Star Conference and know the consistency it takes to win in our league,” Jillson said.  “Our new players have shown their toughness, competitiveness, and eagerness to learn this preseason.”

According to TWU Athletics, Jillson is the only coach to lead the Pioneers to compete in the NCAA National Tournament. The Pioneers went to nationals in 2010-11 and 2015-16. Jillson said she is grateful to work with such talented student-athletes. “I get to do what I love every day. It doesn’t seem like a job,” she said, adding, “My favorite thing about coaching is seeing players continually grow and reach their goals in the classroom, on the court and in life.”

Jillson appears confident that her team will achieve its goals this season. She said she is looking forward to the competition. “I’m excited to go to battle with this group and think we will surprise some teams with our depth and balanced scoring attack. “

As the Pioneers prepare to take to the court, Jillson offered a final bit of advice to her players–and to all TWU students, “Give your best in everything you do!”
