The Career Connections Center will be holding a workshop from 12 to 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, “How to Avoid the Black Hole: Did They Get my Resume?” at the Dallas campus to assist students with getting the most out of their resume submissions.
Associate Director of Career Consulting and Programming D. Renee’ Patchin said the event’s title serves a specific purpose because “. . . [for] students in the nursing program, the PT, the OT program, and even some of the business students, 100 percent of their applications are going through an online portal system.” This procedure means that many resumes will be going through an applicant tracking system. “For many of them, their resume’s not read by a human first but by a software system,” Patchin said.
The workshop will teach students how to identify key words in job descriptions and tailor their resumes to draw a program’s attention. Students will also be coached in how to respond to supplemental questions in job applications to increase their chances of receiving a response. Additionally, students will be advised on common recruiting cycles, which will help students avoid gaps in employment by making them aware of potential response times and start dates.
