In its final few days of competition, the Outdoor Nation campus challenge continues to promote students to get active outside and offer leading schools incentives.

Currently sitting in third place out of 82 schools from across the country, TWU faculty and staff members, students and the community have logged over 8,100 outdoor activities and wracked up 55,031 points.

Associate Director of Fitness and Recreation Karrie Fletcher said: “I think the challenge does what it’s supposed to do and encourages us to get active and enjoy the outdoors.”

To earn points, university communities can document outdoor activities such as backpacking, biking, camping, fishing or hunting, walking and running, and even bird-watching and stargazing. Fletcher added: “I’ve heard several people talk about how they were not active before this challenge and it encouraged them to go do something they haven’t done in a while like go camping or ride a bike.”

The Fit and Rec organized a number of events such as a glow-in-the-dark and daylight scavenger hunts and an outdoor silent disco at the TWU soccer field to encourage students to get outdoors and log activities. Fletcher added: “We wanted them to know it isn’t about skill level, but just about getting outside and enjoying doing something fun. We’ve also given away prizes provided by national sponsors including The North Face, REI and others as incentives for getting involved in the challenge.”
