What and When?
The “Materials: Hard and Soft” exhibit is a juried premier craft exhibition which is held annually by the Greater Denton Arts Council.
The exhibition, which was first orchestrated by Georgia Leach Gough, a local artist, in 1987, aims to give a stage to “top national and international artists as [individuals] celebrate the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media,” according to The Greater Denton Arts Council.
This year, the exhibit will be on display from Feb. 3 until March 5 in the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center on the corner of Bell and Hickory in Denton, Texas, according to The Greater Denton Arts Council.
The Juror
This year’s juror, Perry A. Price, serves as Executive Director of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Perry has an extensive background in contemporary studio craft, material culture, decorative arts and design and was invited to jury the exhibit by the Greater Denton Arts Council back in May of 2017.
As juror, Price was responsible for selecting the pieces featured in this year’s exhibit from over 1,000 submissions which had origins in over 8 countries around the world and numerous states nationwide.
“The hardest part of any juried show is selecting a limited number of pieces that must work together from the hundreds and hundreds of submissions,” Price said. He continued, “there were many pieces that were difficult not to include, but I looked forward to seeing the pieces I selected…the team in Denton did a tremendous job of installing the show, it looks incredible.”
